Every dispensary and brand eventually asks the same question: should we custom-print our cones or buy stock? The answer depends on your volume, your margins, and your competitive positioning. Here's the math.

Stock cones (unbranded, white or brown) cost between $0.04 and $0.08 per unit at volume. Custom-printed cones with a one-color band print start at $0.08 and scale down to $0.06 at 100K+ quantities. Full-wrap multi-color printing runs $0.10–$0.14 per unit. The minimum order for custom is typically 50,000 units.

So the premium for a basic custom print is roughly $0.02–$0.04 per cone. On a 1g pre-roll retailing at $8–$12, that's a negligible cost increase. But the brand value is significant: custom cones create a consistent experience that stock cones cannot replicate.

The breakeven point for most dispensaries is around 2,000 pre-rolls per month. Below that, the minimum order quantity for custom cones means you're sitting on 2+ years of inventory. Above that, you're reordering every 6–12 months, and the per-unit cost difference becomes trivially small.

For brands selling through multiple dispensaries, custom cones are non-negotiable. They're your last touchpoint before consumption — the packaging equivalent of unboxing. Brands that invest in custom cones consistently report higher repeat purchase rates and stronger dispensary relationships.

We offer a Custom Cone Design service that includes mockup generation, Pantone matching, and a 500-unit proof run before committing to volume. Most designs go from concept to proof in 5 business days. Request a design consultation through our enterprise page.
